MB, Socastee sweep rivals, discover playoff fates today

The Myrtle Beach High girls tennis team swept rival North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday in a tune-up for Wednesday’s showdown at Wilson with the Region 7-3A title on the line.

No. 1 singles Jessie Dumas defeated Caitlyn Wolf 6-2, 6-3, No. 2 Rachel Berkey swept Anna Coggeshall 6-0, 6-0, No. 3 Emma Springs beat Makala Gore 6-1, 6-3, No. 4 Carolyn Gore downed Jessie Ellie 6-0, 6-0 and No. 5 Elisabeth Spielvogel shut out Kimarria Vereen 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, the Lady Seahawks’ No. 1 tandem of Catherine Truluck and Katharine Woodard defeated Wolf and Vereen in a pro set, 8-1, and the No. 2 team of Bailey Deskins and Paxton Gentry beat Jessica Beasley and Cameron Parker 6-3, 6-0.

The Lady Seahawks (12-3 overall, 3-1 region) faces Wilson, which is unbeaten in region play. Socastee (13-1, 4-1) defeated Myrtle Beach 4-3 earlier this season while losing to Wilson by the same score. A Myrtle Beach win would force a three-way tie for two playoff spots.

The Lady Braves capped their regular season Tuesday with a 7-0 sweep of rival St. James to keep their postseason chances alive. A Wilson win would vault Socastee into the No. 2 seed of the Class 3-A state tournament.

No. 1 singles Rachel Gresko returned to the lineup to sweep Taylor Seagle 6-0, 6-0, No. 2 Anna Bryce Cox def. Jordan Greene 6-2 6-0, No. 3 Jordan Wesel beat Mariana Wilson 6-1 6-1, No. 4 Haley Duval topped Bailee Hunt 6-1 6-3, and No. 5 Ashlyn Burns downed Hanna Burns 6-1 6-1
