MB’s Golson writing real-life ‘Rudy’ sequel for No. 1 Irish

Hollywood has already made one far-fetched film about Notre Dame football called “Rudy.” Now Myrtle Beach may be producing an equally unbelievable sequel.

A redshirt freshman wins a four-way quarterback battle to win the starting job, then promptly leads the Fighting Irish to their first undefeated season in a quarter century? The dramatic finish to the real-life movie “Everett” will be written in the Jan. 7 BCS National Championship Game in Miami.

The improbability of the tale begins way before the season, when Golson was mired in third on the depth chart behind two returning players. After a flashy spring game, Golson dedicated himself to mastering the offense to the point of a comfort level that would allow his natural abilities to shine through.

After winning the starting job in summer drills, Golson led the Irish to the motherland, Ireland, for a 50-10 season-opening win in Dublin. Golson was far from perfect, but his biggest struggles were still to come – narrow wins over Purdue, Michigan State and Michigan in which he was replaced late.

Bit Golson began putting it all together in a 41-3 win over Miami, and his confidence grew with each game. He led the Irish to an overtime win over Stanford and a 17-14 scare over BYU before having a breakout game against No. 8 Oklahoma, throwing a 50-yard TD strike and running for the go-ahead TD.

But it was the ensuing game against Pittsburgh when Golson proved he could deliver in the clutch, rallying the Irish from behind for a triple overtime win over the Panthers. He improvised the game-tying touchdown drive, then scored the game-winner to lead the Irish to a 29-26 comeback victory.

Golson was simply in control of the offense the rest of the way, with big wins over Boston College and Wake Forest to set the stage for the showdown with Soutnern Cal. He calmly led Notre Dame to a 22-13 victory to cap the program’s first undefeated regular season since 1988, their last national title.

Now the Irish stand 12-0, ranked No. 1 n the nation and facing a showdown with No. 2 Alabama for the national championship. You don’t want to leave this one early; the best part is still to come.
