Mingo Bay Classic: Braves remain perfect in pool play

socbase-daltonsmithswingThe Socastee High baseball team continued its unbeaten run through the Mingo Bay Classic on Thursday with an 11-1 win over Logan that was stopped early via the 10-run mercy rule.

The Braves (16-2 overall, 4-0 tournament) exploded for five runs in the second inning and never looked back in winning their pool. Socastee will advance to single-elimination play Friday.

On Wednesday, Socastee posted a surprising first on Wednesday for a team making a run at the Mingo Bay Classic championship.

Dalton Smith connected for Socastee’s first home run of the season to help the Braves defeat Austintown Fitch 3-1 and remain undefeated in the national tournament.

Socastee pitcher Sam McKinney pitched a complete game seven-hitter, striking out five and walking none to claim the win.

Smith’s solo shot in the third inning broke the scoreless tie and the Braves added two more in the fourth for a 3-0 advantage. Hunter Renfrow and Buck Bacot had two hits apiece for Socastee, which narrowly missed out on another shutout by allowing the lone run in the fifth. But McKinney buckled down and went the rest of the way.

* Conway 6, Hedgesville 1: The Tigers continued theur unbeaten run through Mingo Bay pool play with a win over Hedgesville.

* South Lakes 6, St. James 3: The Sharks suffered their second defeat in pool play to eliminate them from title contention.
