Mingo Bay Baseball: Sharks rally late, Seahawks win big

mbbase-10catchThe St. James High baseball team got back on the winning track with a dramatic 4-3 victory over South Lakes (VA) in Thursday’s fourth round of the Mingo Bay Baseball Classic.

St. James Trystan Freeman delivered a game-winning, walk-off RBI double to help the Sharks improve to 3-1 in the prestigious tournament. Overall, St. James has won four of its last five outings.

The Sharks outhit South Lake by a 6-5 margin, with half of their hits coming off the bat of Jacob English’s 3-for-3 day at the playe with an RBI and a run scored.

St. James starter Kolby Robtoy struck out eight batters before being lifted in the fourth, when South Lake scored a pair of runs to tie it at 3-all. Nick Bray came on to throw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his second win of the week.

The Sharks play at 11 a.m. Friday in their tourney finale.

* Myrtle Beach 15, Spring Valley (WV) 2: The Seahawks scored the game’s first seven runs over the opening three innings, followed by a relentless eight-run inning in the fourth to trigger the mercy rule.

Myrtle Beach’s Jonah McElheney (three RBIs) and Jackson Thomas (two RBIs) each had three hits, and Lawson Cribb had a pair of hits and three RBIs to lead the Seahawks’ 12-hit parade.

Myrtle Beach’s Tyler Burgess pitched four solid innings, striking out five and allowing only three hits.

The Seahawks play their tournament finale at 9 a.m. Friday.

* Carolina Forest 3, Robinson (VA) 0: Junior Austin Padgett pitched four scoreless innings to get the win and freshman David Wellons pitched the final three frames to preserve the shutout and get the save.
