Monasterio’s slam propels Pelicans past Wood Ducks

Andruw Monasterio’s grand slam highlights a six-run fourth inning for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Tuesday in a 10-7 victory over the Down East Wood Ducks from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

With the Pelicans (50-58, 16-22) trailing 5-1 in the fourth inning, the offense exploded on Wood Ducks (46-63, 11-28) starter Joe Palumbo (0-4). Wladimir Galindo smacked an RBI double and Yeiler Peguero laced a run-scoring single to make it 5-3. Monasterio then capped a six-run frame with a grand slam, his second homer of the year, to give the Birds a 7-5 lead.

Jared Young tacked on the Birds, making it 8-5 with a solo jack in the fifth inning. It was Young’s third home run of the year in a game in which he extended his on-base streak to a Pelicans’ season-long 21 games.

The Woodies came back in the top of the sixth when Melvin Novoa hit an RBI double and came in to score later on an error to drop the deficit to just one run.

Right away, the Birds answered back with two runs of their own. Jhonny Pereda ripped an RBI single to extend his on-base streak to 21 games as well. Young then lifted a sacrifice fly into center to plate Monasterio and give the Pelicans a three-run lead at 10-7.

Casey Bloomquist (3-4) earned the win, allowing just two runs, one earned, over 2.1 innings in relief.

In the top of the first inning, the Woodies started the scoring with a solo home run by LeDarious Clark and an RBI double from Josh Altmann, making it 2-0.

The Pelicans drew within one when Luis Ayala plated Young with an RBI ground out, but the Woodies quickly struck back with three in the top of the third. Altmann knocked in his second run on the night with an RBI single and Andretty Cordero ripped a two-run base hit to widen the margin to 5-1.

The Pelicans and the Woodies continue their three-game series with Wednesday’s 7:05 p.m. first pitch .
