Morgan, Steele strike gold to lead CAC at state meet

South Carolina Swimming hosted its annual Short Course Championship Meet this past weekend in Greenville, SC. This year, over 800 swimmers from 28 swim clubs were in action, including 28 swimmers from the Coastal Aquatic Club.

Over the weekend, CAC swimmers brought home state titles as well as individual and team medals. Ian Morgan (500 Free, 1,000 Free, and 1,650 Free) and Taylor Steele (100 Breast and 200 Breast) brought home multiple gold medals. Kayla Aguilar (500 Free and 200 IM) and Harrison Clinton (200 Breast) each won silver medals (second place) while Casey Mitchell (1,000 Free, 1,650 Free) swam to a pair of bronze medals (third place). CAC relay teams brought home a silver and bronze medal as well.

Short course competition takes place in 25-yard pools. The Westside Aquatics Center is a 10-lane venue. Here is a list of all TOP TEN finishes for the meet:

* Ian Morgan: 1st in 1,650 Free; 1st in 1,000 Free; 1st in 500 Free; 5th in 200 Fly; 6th in 400 IM; and 10th in 200 IM.
* Taylor Steele: 1st in 100 Breast; 1st in 200 Breast; and 3rd in 200 IM.
* Kayla Aguilar: 2nd in 500 Free; 2nd in 200 IM, 4th in 200 Free; 4th in 100 Fly; 4th in 100 Back, 5th in 50 Fly; 5th in 100 Free; and 9th in 100 IM.
* Casey Mitchell: 3rd in 1,000 Free; 3rd in 1,650 Free; 8th in 500 Free, 9th in 100 Back; and 10th in 200 Back.
* Harrison Clinton: 2nd in 200 Breast; 5th in 100 Breast; 8th in 200 IM; 10th in 100 Fly; 10th in 400 IM; 10th in 200 Fly.
* John Grey Crosby: 9th in 100 Free.

The Boy’s 15-18 relay team of Ian Morgan, Casey Mitchell, Ryan Eldred, and John Grey Crosby finished 2nd in the 800 Freestyle Relay and 5th in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The Boy’s 15-18 400 Medley relay team of Casey Mitchell, Harrison Clinton, Ryan Eldred, and John Grey Crosby finished in 3rd place while posting a Futures Championship qualifying time set by USA Swimming.

Demonstrating impressive consistency over all the competitive swim strokes, Kayla Aguilar finished in the TOP 5 in 7 of her 8 races and finished 9th in the remaining race. Kayla won the high point award for CAC.

The following swimmers completed in at least one consolation final: Ryan Boudreau, Ryan Eldred, Joe Guthinger, Ella Habib, Olivia McGonigal, Casey Mitchell, Ian Morgan, Taylor Steele, Molly Tate, and Saman Vitharana.

Looking ahead, the following swimmers are qualified to compete in the multi-state sectional meets in March:

* Age-Group Sectionals (in Atlanta, GA): Kayla Aguilar, Joe Guthinger, Molly Tate, and Saman Vitharana.

* Senior Sectionals (in Cary, NC): Harrison Clinton, John Grey Crosby, Ryan Eldred, Casey Mitchell, Olivia McGonigal, Ian Morgan, Christian Patricio, and Taylor Steele.
* NCSA Junior Nationals (in Orlando, FL): Harrison Clinton, Casey Mitchell, Ian Morgan, and Taylor Steele.

The members of this year’s CAC Short Course State Championship team include: Kayla Aguilar, Cecilia Bleyer, Ryan Boudreau, Harrison Clinton, Kennedy Cox, John Grey Crosby, Nick D’Agostino, Ryan Eldred, Jack Guthinger, Joe Guthinger, Ella Habib, Lucas Harrelson, Olivia McGonigal, Logan Mendieta, Casey Mitchell, Ian Morgan, Michael Paglio, Yianni Parachos; Christian Patricio, Marissa Patricio, Chandra Robideaux, Anna Satterfield, Chloe Stampfle, Taylor Steele, Molly Tate, Saman Vitharana, Peyton Widner, and Preston Widner.
