Volleyball Roundup: MB, CF, Conway win season debuts

The Myrtle Beach High volleyball team opened the 2012 season on a winning note Wednesday night with a 3-0 sweep over visiting Loris.

The Lady Seahawks, the defending Class AAA state finalists, struggled in their first game but pulled out a 26-24 win. They cruised to a 25-13 victory in the second before capping the contest with 25-20 win.

Myrtle Beach was led by junior Shelby Sheets with nine kills and four aces. Junior Ashley Kahn added six kills and sophomore setter Caroline Daly had 22 assists.

The Lady Seahawks experienced some serious turnover in the offseason. In addition to the loss of a talented senior class, rising senior Meagan Milligan and the 2011 Region VIII-AAA Player of the Year transferred back to school in Florida.

Myrtle Beach returns to action Sept. 5 against Myrtle Beach Christian Academy.

* Carolina Forest 3, Socastee 2: The Lady Panthers opened the 2012 season with a hard-fought victory over visiting Socastee.

Carolina Forest took the first two matches 25-12 and 25-15 before seeing the Lady Braves rally for 25-13 and 25-20 wins. The Lady Panthers put down the upset threat with a convincing 15-4 win in the tiebreaker.

The Lady Panthers (1-0) were led by Jessica Watt’s 10 service aces, Alyssa Smalls’ 11 kills and Christina Wright’s six blocks.

Socastee (0-1) got 10 service points from Katherine Hall, eight kills from Dale Rogers and 16 assists from Alison Markley.

* Conway 3, St. James 1: The Lady Sharks (0-2) suffered the second straight tough loss while the visiting Lady Tigers (1-0) got the season off to a winning start.

One night after falling to Waccamaw in a tiebreaker, St. James won the opening game against Conway by a 26-24 score. But the Lady Tigers ran off wins of 25-21, 25-14 and 25-18 to claim the intra-county matchup.
