NMB crowns 2 Lower State champs; CF, MB qualify 5

The North Myrtle Beach wrestling team crowned two Lower State champions Saturday, and Carolina Forest and Myrtle Beach each qualified an area-best five wrestlers for next week’s SCHSL individual state wrestling championships.

North Myrtle Beach’s Rahsaan Vereen (160) and Kwame Livingston (285) captured Class 4A Lower State titles, and teammates Brennan Michael (152) and Curtis Wolfe (182) finished third to earn trips to the state tournament.

Meanwhile, Carolina Forest’s Corey Conover (145) won the Class 5A Lower State title in his weight class. Four teammates make the state cut – PJ Wunderlich (126), Noah Sritan (138), Isaiah Poppe (106) and John Winzenried (160).

In Class 4A, Myrtle Beach also qualified five in the top four for a state tourney bid. Pedro Reyes (182) and Daniel Mitchell (195) earned runner-up finishes in their weight divisions. Javier Chan (170) Jacob Cisco (220); and Rustin Ibragimov (285) also made the cut for the Seahawks.

St. James had a pair of 4A qualifiers – runner-up Ethan Mason (106) and Davis Cloer (132). So did Socastee in 5A, with brothers Nick Ward (106) and Tyler Ward (113) placing third and second in their respective weight classes. Conway had one state qualifier – James Hoitt (182).

The 21 local wrestlers finishing in the top four of their weight classes advance to the Feb. 23-24 SCHSL Individual State Wrestling Championships in Anderson.
