NMB girls win region title; MB boys finish runner-up

The North Myrtle Beach High girls cross country team won the Region 6-4A title on its home course Tuesday, while the Myrtle Beach boys team was runner-up at the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex.

Led by eighth-grader Isabella Spickler, who finished second individually with a personal-best time of 21:06, the Lady Chiefs tallied 55 team points to edge Wilson (59) and Darlington (60) in a tight race.

“I’m very proud of our girls,” said North Myrtle Beach cross country coach Alex Booth. “We added some tough teams to the region this year with Darlington and Hartsville. We needed every position to win.”

Hartsville seventh-grader Kaiti Nutt ran away with the title of girls medalist and region runner of the year with a time of 19:45, and her presence up front put some pressure on Spickler to break her personal best.

“It was really hot out there and (Nutt) was really fast,” said Spickler, whose elder sister and former teammate Breeauna was rooting her on from the sidelines. “She made me push my pace and beat my goal.”

North Myrtle Beach’s Havana Charles finished fourth (21:47) and fellow seniors Kaylin Regan (23:19) and Taylor Monahan (23:25) finished 13th and 14th, respectively, to help the Lady Chiefs defend their title.

Myrtle Beach (91) finished fifth behind Hartsville (80). Sophomore Riley Massey finished seventh individually to lead the Lady Seahawks and land the final spot on the all-region team.

The Myrtle Beach boys tallied 56 points to finish behind champion Darlington (31) and ahead of Wilson (66). Junior Tyler Flannelly (17:50) led the way for the Seahawks with a fourth-place all-region finish. Teammates Hayden Ford (18:51), Curt Caudle (18:56) and Jake DeSalvo (18:58) placed 10th through 12th, respectively.

The North Myrtle Beach boys scored 92 team points to edge Hartsville (104) for fourth place. Senior Jensen Button (18:28) finished eighth, one spot and only 6 seconds shy of making the all-region squad.

The Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach boys and girls team advance to next weekend’s Class 4A Lower State cross country meet in Darlington.
