NMB holds off Crestwood, goes to Lower State semis

The North Myrtle Beach High had to battle to keep its undefeated season alive Friday night, but the Chiefs also may have suffered a huge loss.

North Myrtle Beach running back Kered Class, who scored three touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 42-28 victory over visiting Crestwood, left the game with an apparent hamstring injury and did not return. But backfield mates TJ Gore and Ramsey Lewis picked up the slack by running the ball and the clock in the second half to preserve the win and advance to the Class 4A Lower State semifinals. They will travel to Berkeley next Friday.

The win didn’t come easily for the Chiefs (12-0), who used Class’ three rushing TDs and a scoring hookup from Cason McClendon to Derion Conyers for a 28-7 lead in the second quarter. But the Bulldogs scored just before halftime and again early in the third period to put the Chiefs’ celebration on pause.

A Chiefs’ fumble on their own territory gave Crestwood an opportunity to potentially tie the game, but the North Myrtle Beach defense held the Bulldogs to a four-and-out. McClendon later connected with Tyrone Stockdale to bump the lead to 35-28, but Crestwood again responded to make it a one-score game.

Without Class, who rushed 11 times for 121 yards and three scores, the Chiefs turned it over to Gore, who made several punishing runs to pick up first downs, and Lewis, who scored the game-clinching TD late in the fourth. Gore also topped the 100-yard mark with 109 on 17 carries, and Lewis had seven carries for 35 yards and a score.

Class’ status is unknown heading into the third-round game at Berkeley.
