No. 1 Seahawks rally past Panthers in seesaw affair

mbfoot-22The Myrtle Beach High football team rallied from a double-digit deficit in the first quarter to knock off visiting Carolina Forest 24-21 on Friday night at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

In a battle of undefeated teams, the Panthers (3-1) put the No. 1-ranked Seahawks (5-0) in an early hole and kept them there for much of the game before Jermani Green’s 55-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter gave Myrtle Beach the lead for good. The Seahawks (5-0) got the ball back and ran out the clock to escape with the victory and snap a three-year losing skid to Carolina Forest.

Myrtle Beach took the opening drive down field and converted a 23-yard field goal by Matthew Card, but the first of four turnovers for the Seahawks killed their drives and set the table for the Panthers. Carolina Forest quarterback Matt Beale hit Justin Elko for a 31-yard TD score, then Beale scored on a 13-yard TD run for a 14-3 lead on the final play of the first quarter.

Myrtle Beach used a pair of turnovers to strike quickly before the half, both on fumbles recovered by defensive end Sean McGonigal. The first set up a 3-yard TD run by Keyonte Sessions out of the “Wild Hawk” formation, and the second on an 18-yard TD strike from Lawson Cribb to Marcus Grissett in the final minutes of the second quarter to claim a 17-14 halftime edge.

But the Panthers were right back at it following a long homecoming ceremony by picking off a pass and getting another bomb to Elko into the red zone. Anthony McAfee, who filled in nicely for injured star Dyverse Simmons, scored from 3 yards out to put the Panthers back in front 21-17. Carolina Forest held the lead until midway through the fourth after a Seahawks TD was called back on a penalty, but Green’s TD romp with 6:37 left in the game put Myrtle Beach back on top for good.

The Seahawks travel to rival Conway next week in the Battle of the Victory Bell matchup. Carolina Forest welcomes Loris for the Panthers’ first home game of the season.
