No. 11 Chants post another win over ranked opponent

ccusoc-22Darius Strambler scored Coastal Carolina’s first goal in the 36th minute, Hofstra’s Danny Elliott evened the contest in the 78th; however, Bryce Follensbee provided the 11th-ranked Chanticleers the game-winner in the 83rd, lifting Coastal to a 2-1 win over the 22nd-ranked Pride.

The win improved Coastal to 10-1-1 on the season and an impressive 3-0-1 against nationally ranked opponents. Moreover, Coastal reached the 10-win plateau for the sixth consecutive season. Hofstra fell to 10-5-0 with the defeat.

The teams exchanged extended spells of possession in the opening 30-plus minutes before Strambler staked the Chants a 1-nil lead at the 35:26 mark. The sophomore connected on a strike from the top of the box, marking his second goal of the campaign. Arnar Geirsson fed the ball ahead to Strambler who shielded his defender, turned and launched his one-timer into the right back corner of the net.

Coastal controlled the ball throughout the remainder of the half and bulks of the first 30 minutes in the second half. However, Hofstra made the most of its opportunities in the second half as Elliott evened the score at 1-1 in the 78th minute. Meshack Eshun Addy launched a perfect cross from the right side into the box where it was redirected into the goal by the head of Elliott.

The Chants regained control and five minutes later Follensbee was on the receiving end of a perfect Tobenna Uzo cross through the box. Uzo, who beat his initial defender with a flick to himself, was 1v1 with Hofstra keeper Patric Pray on the left side of the 6-yard box, but wisely crossed the ball toward the right post where Follensbee tapped it in for a 2-1 Coastal lead.

Coastal played defensive and tactical soccer throughout the remainder of the match, securing the 2-1 victory.

CCU outshot Hofstra 15-4 in the match and earned six corners to the Pride’s three. Chanticleer keeper Fernando Pina (10-1-1) was credited with four saves and the win, while Hofstra’s Pray (10-5-0) notched four stops and the loss.

Coastal next returns to Big South play Sat., Oct. 24 at Longwood. The Chants and Lancers have met four times since Longwood joined the league in 2012 with Coastal claiming victory in each by a combined 17-1 score.
