No. 15 Chants gather steam heading into Hampton game

Coastal Carolina is 3-0!

It might not sound like much in September with a lot of football still to be played, but it’s also the first time in program history the Chanticleers have been able to crow about starting a season 3-0.

So obviously the 15th-ranked Chants can make more history by going 4-0 tonight when they host Hampton. Coastal is coming off a big win over Eastern Kentucky and hopes to keep the momentum going against the winless Pirates. CCU coach Joe Moglia isn’t concerned about how his team will handle the success.

“I think they have already had success. I think they have handled it beautifully. I would expect nothing less from our guys,” he said. “… the objective is (to) be well prepared, understand what your job is, be committed to giving it your very best, and you will increase the probability that you will be successful. Win or lose, I expect our guys to handle it like men, I expect them to come back the following week ready to go.”

It’s not just the 3-0 start that has the Conway campus abuzz. Dating back to last season, Moglia has led the Chants to a 9-1 record over their last 10 games, besting opponents by an average of 19.3 points in the nine victories. That lone loss was a hard-fought road defeat at James Madison in the NCAA playoffs’ round of 16.

But the Chants seemed to find a new gear at EKU, scoring 37 unanswered points behind a potent 1-2 punch of quarterback Alex Ross and running back Lorenzo Taliaferro. The CCU offense rolled to 631 yards as Ross threw for 292 yards and rushed for 78 more. Taliaferro rushed 17 times for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

“It makes us so much more balanced,” Taliaferro said of Ross’ emergence. “He has been running since the spring and going into the first two games you would think that after seeing him run in practice you would see him run more, but I think he actually unleashed it this third game. If he continues to do that then I don’t think anyone can stop us.”

Certainly not winless Hampton as long as the Chants don’t suffer a serious setback. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
