No. 18 Coastal battles past Buckeyes for walk-off win

ccubase-Anthony Marks vs Ohio StateThe 17th Annual Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach, which is one of – if not the – premier baseball events, concluded in exciting fashion Monday with host and 18th-ranked Coastal Carolina pulling out a 3-2, 10-inning win versus Ohio State at Springs Brooks Stadium.

Coastal senior Anthony Marks was 4-for-5, scored the game-tying run in the ninth and then drove in the game-winner. In fact, Marks accounted for all three CCU runs – scoring in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. He had four of CCU’s nine hits while drawing a walk as well.

The Chanticleers (5-2) and Buckeyes (5-2-1) had battled on Saturday with visitors claiming a 6-4 win despite CCU sending the winning runs to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings. However, on Monday, Coastal was able to capitalize in the late innings to secure the come-from-behind win.

In the ninth, Marks slapped a single through the left side of the infield to start the rally. Then, down to its last out, Coastal senior Zack Remillard tripled off the center field wall to score Marks and tie the game, 2-2.

Chanticleer senior relief pitcher Mike Morrison struck out the side in the top of the 10th to keep the momentum on the side of Coastal.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, freshman Cameron Pearcey placed a single between the OSU center fielder, left fielder and shortstop. Fellow freshman Kieton Rivers moved Pearcey up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt. The Buckeyes elected to intentionally walk David Parrett. Pinch hitter Josh Crump loaded the bases with a walk of his own. Marks worked the count full then lined a single to left field, dropping just before a diving Ronnie Dawson – the OSU left fielder – for the game-winnner.

Morrison (2-0) worked the final two innings in relief to get the win. He did not allow a hit or a run while walking one and striking out five. CCU starter Cole Schaefer was solid on the mound for a second straight outing but once again did not factor in the decision. The junior allowed six hits and two runs over 6.0 innings. Austin Kitchen pitched two scoreless innings, allowing no hits or walks, to bridge the gap between Schaefer and Morrison.

Ohio State got on the scoreboard first with a run in the third inning. Jacob Bosiokovic drew a two-out walk and Dawson followed with a single. Nick Sergakis lined an RBI single to right field to score Bosiokovic. On the play, the throw home got away from CCU catcher Matt Beaird, but Schaefer backed-up home and threw out Dawson at third for the final out and keep the score 1-0.

Coastal answered with a run in the home half of the third. Marks reached on an infield single and stole second. G.K. Young delivered an RBI single back up the middle to bring home Marks and tie the game 1-1.

The Buckeyes regained a one-run lead in the sixth. Sergakis doubled and advanced to third on an infield single by Jalen Washington. Zach Ratcliff followed with a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Sergakis.

Coastal Carolina left 12 runners on base, including two in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings before Remillard’s RBi triple in the ninth.

Dawson and Sergakis each had two hits for the Buckeyes. OSU starting pitcher Ryan Feltner pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and one run with three walks and six strikeouts. Seth Kinker (0-1) suffered the loss. He started the 10th inning and recorded one out before surrendering the game-winner.

Coastal Carolina will return to action Wednesday with a trip to region rival College of Charleston. First pitch at Patriots Point is set for 5 pm. The Chanticleers will return home to host the annual Chanticleer Classic. The field includes #13 Mississippi, Cincinnati and Ball State.
