No. 20 Coastal celebrates Senior Day with a bang

ccubase-srdaySeniors Connor Owings, Zach Remillard, Tyler Chadwick and David Parrett all hits home runs – part of a CCU school-record seven – on Senior Day to lead #20 Coastal Carolina to a 23-4, seven-inning win over Campbell in the teams’ 2016 regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium. (The teams mutually decided to end the game after the top of the seventh.)

Owings was 3-for-3 to push his season average to .405 with four RBI, three runs scored and hit his 15th home run. Remillard was 2-for-6 with three RBI and hit his league-leading 16th home run. Chadwick hit his seventh home runs, drove in three and scored three times while Parrett hit his second home run.

In addition, junior Michael Paez (3-for-5, four RBI) hit two home runs to give the shortstop 13 and sophomore Seth Lancaster (4-for-5 with six RBI) hit his sixth home run of the season. Other stars included Billy Cooke going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and G.K. Young going 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Coastal Carolina (40-15, 21-3 Big South) will be the top seed at next week’s Big South Championship, played May 24-28 in at the Lexington County (S.C.) Baseball Stadium. The Chants will face Radford in the opening round on Tuesday at 4:30 pm.

Despite the shortened game Saturday, Coastal Carolina hit a school-record seven home runs, batted around in the first and fourth innings, scored a season-high 23 runs and had a season-high 20 hits. It marked the fourth consecutive Saturday the Chanticleers have hit at least four home runs in a game and the seventh time this season CCU has accomplished the feat. The 23 runs by CCU marks the most since scoring 24 in a win at Gardner-Webb on April 17, 2010.

The game got started 30 minutes late as CCU honored its four baseball spring graduates (redshirt junior Alex Cunningham, Owings, Parrett and Remillard), its nine baseball seniors (Chadwick, Patrick Corbett, Adam Hall, Anthony Marks, Mike Morrison, Owings, Parrett, Tyler Poole and Remillard) and held a ceremony with Tami Springs Brooks for a commemoration of Springs Brooks Stadium.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Coastal raced out to a 7-0 lead and never looked backCoastal freshman Jason Bilous (2-1) earned his second straight win. He struck out six in five innings and only allowed four hits, but walked four to surrender three runs. Seniors Patrick Corbett and Tyler Poole each pitched an inning to close out the regular season careers.
