Chanticleers lay goose egg, suffer loss to The Citadel

After giving up six walks in his last outing, Coastal Carolina starter Javier Reynoso bounced back to strike out six and walk one over five innings but he received no run support as the 28th-ranked Chanticleers dropped a 3-0 decision at The Citadel Tuesday night.

Coastal (18-9) had won eight straight over the Bulldogs (12-16) and seven straight at The Citadel’s home field, Joseph P. Riley Park.

Reynoso falls to 2-1, allowing just three hits and taking a no hitter into the fourth inning.

Coastal had chances early but could not take advantage, loading the bases in the first inning and getting a leadoff double in the fourth.

However, The Citadel did take advantage of its first opportunity in the bottom of the fourth. Mason Davis had the Bulldogs’ first hit, a leadoff double, and scored on a two-out single by Joe Jackson. After a wild pitch sent Jackson to second, Calvin Orth delivered an RBI single to center for a 2-0 lead.

The Chants threatened again in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but Bulldog pitcher Kevin Connell (1-2) got an inning-ending double play.

Connell pitched a career-high seven innings, scattering four hits and five walks with four strike outs in the win. Ryan Hines worked the final 1.1 innings for his second save.

The Bulldogs were once again able to take advantage of their opportunities to go up 3-2 in the sixth. Davis had another leadoff double and, after miscommunication in the outfield on a fly ball, Mackert reached on a single to put runners on the corners.  Pinch hitter Hughston Armstrong grounded out to score Davis.

Bowman had three of Coastal’s six hits with Jacob May, Rich Witten and Alex Buccilli each collecting one.

Coastal Carolina will stay on the road and return to Big South play this weekend, facing Gardner-Webb. The teams will play a single game Friday (6 pm) in Boiling Springs, N.C., and a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 pm.
