No. 4 Tar Heels net four late goals to down No. 13 Chants

After playing level with No. 4 North Carolina for 65-plus minutes, No. 13 Coastal Carolina surrendered four goals in an 18-minute span en route to a 4-0 defeat on Monday afternoon at the Tar Heels’ Fetzer Field.

North Carolina (2-0-0) broke the scoreless tie in the 68th minute as Tyler Engle registered his second goal of the season. Marco Sunol’s corner into the box was headed twice before bouncing to Engle, who ripped his scoring strike into the back of the net. The goal was the first surrendered by the Chants, who shut out No. 17 Wake Forest in the season-opener, of the 2013 season.

North Carolina added a second goal 10 minutes later off the foot of Jordan McCray. Engle beat a Chanticleer defender to the left side of the ‘18 and launched a cross into the box. Coastal’s Devin Cook punched the cross away; unfortunately, the ball fell to the foot of McCray, who scored on his uncontested shot.

The Tar Heels added a third goal at the 83rd minute as Glen Long scored on a give-and-go with Alex Walter on the right side of the box. Raby George tallied the final counter of the game at the 85:24 mark on a 30-yard strike, providing the 4-nil score.

Coastal (1-1-0) was not without opportunities in the second half. The Chants tallied a pair of corners that led to wide header by Kai Morton. Justin Portillo’s initial corner kick in the 77th minute was cleared, but Shawn McLaws gathered the loose ball and sent it back to Portillo who set up from the left side of the box. Portillo sent in a great ball toward the head of the hard-charging Morton; however, Morton was unable to get his header on goal.

The much of the first half featured equal play as the teams kept play centralized in the midfield. Coastal was able to find a few scoring chances; however, Ricky Garbanzo’s and Pedro Ribeiro’s shots sailed high of what looked to be an open net.

Coastal held a 6-5 edge in corner opportunities, while North Carolina tallied a 10-4 advantage in shots.

Tar Heel keeper Brendan Moore was credited with the win, while Coastal’s Cook suffered the loss. Both keepers played the entirety of the contest.

Coastal opens in front of its home fans at the CCU Soccer Field at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, hosting No. 21 Charlotte. The Chants and 49ers have met in each of the previous two seasons with Charlotte claiming wins each time.
