North edges South as rain keeps teams on their toes

The Class 4A North-South All-Star Boys Tennis showcase managed to sneak in a complete event between heavy rains at the Myrtle Beach Tennis Center on Saturday, and the outcome was as much of a close call as the weather.

The North squad edged the South by a 5-4 score in a contest that was decided by a pair of three-set tiebreakers in singles play. The all-star contest featured top seniors from the Upper State against their counterparts from the Lower State.

In doubles action, the South took two of three matches. North’s No. 1 team of Anuraag Govindarajan (JL Mann) and Jaden Tubb (Travelers Rest) defeated Matt Oliver (Hilton Head) and Blake Long (Myrtle Beach) 8-4.

The South’s No. 2 team of James Giannelli (Berkeley) and Brenden Healey beat Bradley Bomar (Easley) and Isaac McMillan (Clinton) 8-4, and the South’s No. 3 squad of Luke Meetze (Chapin) and Zach Kirkland (AC Flora) topped Blaine Lawter (Boiling Spring) and Ben Luke (Greenwood) 8-4.

But the North took four of the six singles matches, including a pair of three-set tiebreakers at Nos. 4 and 5. Luke defeated Meetze 6-1, 3-6, 11-9, and Tubb edged Ginnelli 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 in a pair of nail-biters that proved to be the difference.

The North’s No. 2 singles McMillan downed Kirkland 6-0, 6-0, and No. 6 Lawter defeated Long 6-1, 6-1. The South’s No. 1 Oliver defeated Govindarajan 6-3, 6-4, and No. 3 Healey beat Bomar 6-2, 6-2.

The teams were coached by Amy Martin (AC Flora) and Jen Weltkamper (Hilton Head), and overseen by Jeri Himmelsback (Myrtle Beach), who serves as president of the South Carolina Tennis Coaches Association.
