North Florida leads, Coastal in top 10 at Hackler tournament

Coastal Carolina, hosting the annual General Jim Hackler Championship at the 7,189-yard, par 71 DeBordieu Club, is in ninth place, shooting 607 through two rounds Sunday.

The 15-team field, featuring seven of the nation’s top 50 teams, is led by North Florida (582).

While the Chanticleers did not have the day they had hoped, Peter Valesek, playing as an individual, is second after two rounds. The freshman carded a one-under par 70 in the first round and posted an even-par round of 71. His one-under 141 trails the leader by two strokes and is one stroke ahead of a two-way tie for second. North Florida’s Sean Dale, ranked 46th individually in the nation, leads the 84-individual field, shooting a three-under 1399 (69-70).

North Florida, ranked 14th, moved from sixth after round one to first after shooting a two-under par round of 282 in the afternoon session. Ninth-ranked Arkansas is second (584), followed by 19th-ranked New Mexico (587), 49th-ranked and two-time defending NCAA champion Augusta State (587), 41st ranked East Carolina (589) and 24th-ranked Virginia (590).

Valasek was able to be among the contenders as he led the field in par 3 scoring at three-under. He had seven birdies (tied for fourth-best among the 84-player field) and 24 pars (sixth-best in the field).

Ben Wheeler and Charlie Winegardner are pacing the Chanticleers through two rounds, each tying for 31st. Wheeler shot 77-74 for a 36-hole total of 151, while Winegardner turned in rounds of 72-79 for his 151. Wheeler had 23 pars and Winegardner played the par 5’s at two-under.

Sebastian Soderberg is in 39th after rounds of 78-74, one stroke behind Wheeler and Winegardner at 152. Kevin Vanden Heuvel is tied for 47th (77-78=155) and Andrew Dorn is tied for 56th (80-77=158).

Joining Valasek as playing an individual for Chants is Easton Renwick and Ty Wengel. Renwick shot 84-78=162 and is in 76th. However, he led the field with two eagles on Sunday. Wengel, playing in his first event as a Chanticleer, shot 85-84=169 and is in 83rd place.

The 54-hole event will conclude Monday with tee times ranging from 7:30-9:10 am starting off the first and 10th holes.
