Golf: Seahawks top Tigers; True Blue to host Palmetto

The Myrtle Beach boys golf team survived chilly and windy conditions to defeat Conway by 16 strokes at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.

Myrtle Beach posted the three low scores in the nine-hole round, led by medalist and defending Class 4A state champion Holden Grigg at 2-over 38.

Keegan Vaugh (41) and Chris Pacyna (44) took the second and third individual spots, and teammate Nick Andrews (52) rounded out the Seahawks’ foursome with a team total of 175.

Conway was led by Cliff Todd (46), followed by the Tigers’ foursome of Raleigh Cook (47), Ridge Hayes (48) and Camden Brown (50).

Palmetto Championship

* Twenty-eight teams from nine states are poised to play in the 20th annual Palmetto High School Golf Championship on the Grand Strand Thursday through Saturday.

The 54-hole, college style event begins on Thursday with a qualifying round at True Blue Golf Club. Based on qualifying scores, teams will be flighted for 36 holes of stroke play competition.

Friday and Saturday rounds will be played at True Blue and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, both of which are ranked among America’s top 100 public courses.

The field is highlighted by Boiling Springs (S.C.) High School and its No. 1 player, Trent Phillips, the fifth ranked junior boy in America, according to Golfweek.

Current PGA Tour players Rickie Fowler, the 2006 champion, and Harris English are among the Palmetto’s distinguished alums.

Caledonia is ranked 29th on Golf Magazine’s list of the Top 100 You Can Play, a ranking of America’s best public courses, and True Blue is 77th on the prestigious list. Both layouts are Mike Strantz designs that offer distinct, yet equally dramatic and memorable experiences.

Caledonia, which is equal parts art and architecture, plays through a stunning piece of lowcountry land that was once home to a thriving rice plantation. A round at True Blue, while completely different from a design perspective, is no less captivating. Strantz used waste bunkers, which frame many of the course’s fairways, to craft a layout that is among the area’s most visually stunning.
