CF, Conway, MB, Socastee, St. James win exhibitions

There were lightning-quick strikes from the sky and thundering bursts on the field during Game 3 of Friday night’s CNB Kickoff Classic. … and then the rains came.

Carolina Forest was dominating Green Sea Floyds 27-0 at The Backyard when thunderstorms forced the postponement of the preseason football jamboree, but the Panthers had already created an offensive storm of their own.

With Carolina Forest losing last year’s starting quarterbacks and two receivers to the college ranks, the young Panthers quickly answered any questions about their ability to fill in for the lost production.

On the first play from scrimmage, first-year starting QB Will Brunson dropped back and hit Zavier Jones with a 50-yard bomb, setting the table for running back Harold Atkinson’s 5-yard touchdown run on the next play.

The TDs just kept coming, with Brunson hooking up with receiver Jamar White for a 62-yard TD connection on the ensuing series, then hitting tight end Ryan Yurachek for an 18-yard TD pass just moments later.

Atkinson capped the onslaught with a 23-yard TD rumble just as lightning appeared over the skies in Conway. The Panthers and Trojans mercifully called it a game at 27-0 with 6 minutes left in the 20-minute scrimmage period.

Granted, the Class AAAA Panthers were playing a Class A squad, but they appear to have answered questions about whether the offense is capable of providing a balanced attack this season.

In other action:

* Myrtle Beach 7, Loris 3: Myrtle Beach’s two-quarterback rotation from last year may become a lethal touchdown combination this season.

Seahawks quarterback Tyler Keane connected on a 50-yard touchdown pass with C.J. Cooper, who shared QB responsibilities with Keane in 2011. Moving to receiver to fill the gap for several key losses, Cooper proved he can receive as well as give.

The score allowed the Seahawks to come from behind to beat the Lions, who booted a 35-yard field goal earlier in the game. The Seahawks took control with one explosive play, which has been their bread and butter in recent years.

* Conway 28, North Myrtle Beach 0: The host Tigers steamrolled the Chiefs in the nightcap after getting off to a slow start in front of their hometown crowd.

Still scoreless midway through the game, Conway’s highly recruited senior quarterback Mykal Moody hit Sawyer Jordan for a 26-yard TD connection to get on the scoreboard.

The Tigers added to their lead after picking off a North Myrtle Beach pass on the ensuing drive. The Tigers quickly capitalized on a 30-yard TD run by Tyreke Phillips, and Ikeem Coles capped the scoring with a fumble return for a TD. The Tigers’ backups added a late score on a long touchdown pass.

* Socastee 17, Aynor 14: The Braves needed a last-minute field goal to complete a comeback victory over the Blue Jackets. Ryan Sutton’s 24-yard with 19 seconds remaining in the game secured the victory for Socastee.

After getting on the scoreboard first on a 2-yard touchdown run by Austin Stanley, the Braves found themselves in a hole against the pesky Jackets, who scored back-to-back TDs to take a 14-7 lead over Socastee.

But quarterback Hunter Renfrow connected on a 45-yard touchdown pass to Delano Walters with 4 minutes left and the defense got the ball back on an Aynor turnover. The Braves set the table for Sutton’s chipshot and the win.

* St. James 14, Waccamaw 0: The Sharks took their time getting the offense untracked but eventually pulled away from the Warriors.

St. James running back Austin Adams broke free for a 7-yard touchdown run to put the Sharks on the scoreboard first.

St. James quarterback Joshua Roper scored the game-winner with 5 minutes remaining in the game, busting loose for a 5-yard TD on a keeper. The Sharks defense held the Warriors out of the end zone the rest of the way.
