Pelicans prospect Gonzalez scores first victory as a pro

pel-chichi2The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, bounced back from their walk-off loss on Saturday with a 5-2 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium.

Right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez fired 6.2 innings, a career-high, to pick up his first professional win.

For the third straight game, the Pelicans struck for the game’s first run. They plated two runs on three hits off of Daniel Stumpf in the first inning. An RBI double from Christopher Bostick and an RBI single from Royce Bolinger gave the Pelicans a 2-0 lead. Both Bostick and Bolinger had big games.

Bolinger picked up a two-out single in the third to get a rally started. Jorge Alfaro and Preston Beck both singled behind Bolinger to bring home another run and extend the lead to 3-0.

Wilmington (9-13) left a man in scoring position in the second and the third inning, but got to Gonzalez in the fourth. Pelicans starting pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez plunked Terrance Gore with a 3-2 fastball with one out. Gore stole second base and was tripled home by Raul Mondesi. Bubba Starling knocked in Mondesi on a fielder’s choice to short to cut the lead to 3-2.

It was the last time that Wilmington would score. Gonzalez scattered four hits, a walk, and a hit batter around 6.2 innings. He allowed two runs and threw a team-high 97 pitches en route to his first professional win. He fanned four. Myrtle Beach (15-8) pitching stranded at least one Blue Rocks base runner in the final four innings and a man in scoring position in each of the final three innings. Wilmington went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Bostick clubbed a two-run opposite field homer in the ninth to add insurance for the Birds. The second baseman collected three hits and drove in three. Bolinger also had a three-hit ballgame, his fourth three-plus hit game and ninth multi-hit game, both of which lead the team.  Bolinger now leads the league in hitting (.377).

Gonzalez (1-2) picked up the win, his first win in 19 professional starts. Stumpf (0-4) allowed three runs in 4.1 innings and was saddled with the loss.

Myrtle Beach plays game three of the series in Wilmington at 6:35 p.m. on Monday night. The next Pelicans home game is on Thursday.
