Pelicans allow lone run of series in sweep of Rocks

pel-buckelnewThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans finally allowed a run in the series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks but still won 5-1 on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium.

Chad Bell picked up his fifth win in nine Pelicans starts, and the Blue Rocks committed a season-high five errors in the defeat. Chris Garia swiped two bags and has 40 on the season, matching a Pelicans single-season record.

In a scoreless game in the third, the Pelicans (26-21, 70-45) got a two-out baserunner aboard on with the first of three errors by third baseman Ramon Torres, allowing Garia aboard. He stole second base and got to third on a second error by Torres, this time off the bat of Christopher Bostick. Bostick and Garia then completed the double steal to score the first run. The two steals for Garia tied him with Adam Stern for most steals in a season-season in Pelicans history. Stern had 40 in 2002.

Then Preston Beck singled in Bostick to make it 2-1.

Wilmington (20-24, 53-59) halved the lead on a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt, and a fielder’s choice. Otherwise, starter Chad Bell was untouched. He struck out a season-high six batters, walked two, and allowed just two hits over five innings.

Another three Wilmington errors cost two unearned runs in the sixth. With two outs, the Pelicans had five straight men reach. Lewis Brinson doubled in Bolinger to plate the only earned run of the game for the Birds, and Brinson and David Lyon both scored on errors.

The Birds bullpen continued their dominance. After four hitless innings on Wednesday, Cody Buckel, Victor Payano, Josh McElwee, and Abel De Los Santos tossed four scoreless and walkless innings on Thursday, allowing just two hits.

Bell (5-1) picked up the win, while Sean Manaea (4-8), who allowed five runs, one earned, took the loss.

The Pelicans head to Zebulon to take on the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night for the first of three games.
