Pelicans come back late in 2-1 extra innings win

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, came from behind to beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks Sunday, using a Brett Nicholas homerun in the top of the ninth to extend the game to extra innings for a 2-1 win.

Down 1-0 in the ninth inning, Nicholas mashed a line drive homerun off reliever Edwin Carl to tie the game and give Myrtle Beach its first run of the game.  The shot was also the first extra base hit by either team.  The Pelicans had racked up only four singles prior to the homerun, picking up only two off Wilmington starter Jason Adam.

Myrtle Beach continued to hit Carl in the 10th inning, pushing across the winning run on three consecutive two out hits.  Hanser Alberto began the string with a single to left ahead of a Nicholas single to the same spot.  Christian Villanueva came through after that with a double to the rightfield corner, scoring Alberto and giving Myrtle Beach a 2-1 lead.

On the mound, Randy Henry went six and a third innings of one run ball for the Pelicans.  The lone run for the Blue Rocks came in unearned in the second inning when Lane Adams reached on an error and scored three batters later.  It’s the third consecutive quality start for the Pelicans converted closer. Jimmy Reyes earned the win out of the bullpen with Ben Rowen pitching the 10th for his seventh save.

Adam was the recipient of a tough luck no decision for the Blue Rocks.  The starter, who leads the league with nine losses, pitched his finest outing to date.  He allowed three hits, all singles, in seven and a third.  He also struck out a career high nine.

Myrtle Beach with the win is now 8-3 in extra inning games, by four the most extra inning wins in the Carolina League.

The Pelicans and Blue Rocks duel for the third straight day Monday at 7:05 with Randol Rojas against Matt Ridings.  For more information follow online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
