Pelicans fall to Hillcats, host season finale Monday night

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, lost 8-3 Sunday night to the Lynchburg Hillcats in front of 5,330 fans at TicketReturn.com Field.

A four-run fifth inning for the ‘Cats put them up for good. Teodoro Martinez led off the Pelicans hitters with a solo home run on the second pitch of the game off Aaron Northcraft.

The Pelicans early lead did not last very long. Lynchburg struck back in the second with three straight singles by Edward Salcedo, Braeden Schlehuber and Emerson Landoni. Salcedo scored on Landoni’s single and Schlehuber scored on a Matt Weaver ground out to third.

Myrtle Beach would tie it up at 3 in the bottom of the third.  The Pelicans loaded the bases on three straight singles by Martinez, Tomas Telis and Hanser Alberto. Telis’ and Alberto’s were both infield hits. Martinez scored when Vinny DiFazio was hit by a pitch and Telis scored on a groundout to first.

An Edward Salcedo leadoff homerun to left in the fourth would put Hillcats up for good. They would extend that lead in the fifth with four runs in the inning. Mycal Jones, Dan Brewer and Schlehuber all hit doubles in the inning for Lynchburg. Brewer’s double drove in Jones and Nick Ahmed, who singled. Schlehuber’s ground rule double drove in Brewer and Milligan, who walked.

In all, Pelicans starter Randol Rojas (L, 9-6) was hit around for seven earned runs over five innings. He allowed nine hits and struck out four. Aaron Northcraft (W, 10-11) allowed three runs over six innings while striking out three.

Zach Osbourne pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh for the Birds out of the pen. Greg Williams made his Myrtle Beach debut after being called up from Class-A Hickory. He allowed one run on a David Rohm single, which drove in Salcedo.

Francisco Mendoza continued to pitch well striking out the side in the ninth inning. The Hillcats got three scoreless innings from their bullpen. That includes Juan Jaime who struck out the side the day he came off the DL. He was consistently throwing 100 MPH on the radar gun.

Myrtle Beach tries to win the series and finish the regular season on a strong note Monday night at 6:05PM. Kyle Devore takes the mound in the regular season finale against Dimasther Delgado. There will be postgame fireworks.

The Pelicans must win their best of three playoff series at the Winston-Salem Dash in order to host another game this season in the Mills Cup Finals.
