Pelicans gift wrap game to Blue Rocks with errors, walks

Odubel HerreraThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans lost for just the second time to the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Monday night at Frawley Stadium 2-1. The Pelicans gave up an unearned run in the second and an earned tally in a four-walk fifth inning.

Both starters pitched well early. The Pelicans Sam Wolff allowed two singles and a walk in the first four frames. Wilmington’s southpaw Sean Manaea faced the minimum through three innings and got out of a two-on one-out jam in the fourth.

A two-error second inning against Wolff, however, led to the first run of the game. Johermyn Chavez reached with one out on a ground ball to short that was bobbled by Hanser Alberto. With two outs, an infield single and a throwing error by Christopher Bostick allowed Chavez to score from first base for the game’s first run.

In a 1-0 game in the fifth, Sam Wolff handed out four straight one-out walks to bring home another run. Wolff got out of the inning with a double play started by Alberto with a backhanded stop. That was the end of the night for Wolff, who went five innings, allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and five walks. He fanned five.

The Pelicans (15-9) got a leadoff double to left in the sixth from Odubel Herrera, knocking Manaea from the ballgame. Manaea struck out at career high over five-plus innings. With Mark Peterson on the mound, Chris Garia moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt, and Bostick drove him in with a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 2-1.

That’s all Myrtle Beach would do against Peterson. He retired all twelve men that he faced, collecting the four-inning save, his fourth save of the year. Manaea (1-2) earned his first professional win, just one day after the Pelicans’ Chi Chi Gonzalez did the same. Wolff (3-2) suffered his first defeat since his first start of the season.

The win for Wilmington (9-13) was just their second of the season in 10 games against the Pelicans.

Myrtle Beach wraps up their series and road trip in Wilmington at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday.
