Pelicans’ homers hammer Keys as MB wins 8 out of 10

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, blasted the Frederick Keys Sunday, 9-4, at Harry Grove Stadium.

The Pelicans, winners of eight of their last 10 games, took the season series 14-6 over the Keys.

The Pelicans wasted no time jumping on the board early, scoring a leadoff single from Odubel Herrera in the first.  Brett Nicholas doubled him in three batters later for a 1-0 lead.  Teodoro Martinez then widened the gap in the third with a two-run homer, his fifth.  A Nicholas RBI single also plated a run that inning and made it 4-1 Myrtle Beach.

The score remained steady until the seventh inning when the Pelicans pushed another across.  With two outs Yefry Castillo singled up the middle, removing starter Trent Howard from the game.  Cookie then stole second and scored on a double by Herrera, hit off reliever Oscar Melendez.  Odubel was thrown out to end the inning in an effort to triple.  It was 5-1.

Adding the extra one proved critical in the bottom of the seventh when Tyler Townsend homered off Roman Mendez to cut the lead to 5-3.  It marked the first two runs off Mendez since his move to the bullpen.

Uncomfortable with only a two-run lead the Pelicans decided to do something about it, scoring four more times in the top of the eighth.  Three of the first four hitters reached safely on a Martinez infield single, Hanser Alberto double and Vinny DiFazio single.  Alberto and DiFazio drove in runs with their knocks.  For Alberto it was his ninth game out of 10 with an RBI.  Jhonny Gomez punctuated the inning with a homerun to score two for a 9-3.

Frederick added a run on a solo homer from Jerome Pena in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Myrtle’s firm grasp.  The Pelicans won 9-4.

Kyle DeVore, starting for Randol Rojas, went five innings for his second win, allowing one run on six singles.  The loss goes to Howard.  Matt West pitched two innings for the Pelicans to close the game.

Myrtle Beach now continues its roadtrip to Lynchburg for a 7:05 start Monday.  Luke Jackson takes the ball against lefty Dimasther Delgado.
