Pelicans honor cancer survivors this weekend

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will look a little bit different this weekend when they take the field against the Carolina Mudcats and Salem Red Sox.  The Pelicans will be ditching their regular home uniforms for special jerseys adorned with pink, blue and purple ribbons, representing the awareness colors for breast, prostate and all forms of cancer.

The Pelicans special jerseys will be auctioned off to bidding fans to benefit the Dylan Martin Leukemia Foundation.  Martin is a rising sophomore at Socastee High School and a member of the wrestling team.  He went 29-6 as a freshman, wrestling at 113 lbs.  He was diagnosed with leukemia last month.  Fans can bid on jerseys all weekend with winners being announced after Sunday’ game.

There will also be an auction for autographed memorabilia, signed by Texas Rangers stars Michael Young and Nelson Cruz and Cleveland Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore.  Those auctions will benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation of America.

“Almost everybody knows somebody who has been affected by cancer,” Pelicans General Manager Scott Brown said.  “It’s a disease that in one way or another impacts many of our lives.  It’s a small part to play for the Pelicans to help raise awareness for those who have survived or those who are currently battling cancer.  We’re glad we can play a role in that fight and are excited for Pelicans fans to join us.”

With Saturday’s game highlighting prostate cancer awareness, Ed Randall’s Bat for the Cure will be on hand.  Bat for the Cure is an official “Homegrown Charity Partner of Minor League Baseball.”  It’s run by New York radio host Ed Randall, a survivor himself of prostate cancer.  Players will wear blue wrist bands from the organization and there will also be a team autographed blue bat raffled off Saturday night.

The weekend’s games will also feature ceremonial first pitches from cancer survivors.

Myrtle Beach continues its current six game homestand tonight at 7:05, starting Survivor’s Weekend against the Carolina Mudcats.  The homestand runs through Tuesday, July 3rd, with the Pelicans Independence Eve fireworks extravaganza!  For tickets and more information call 843-918-6000 or visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
