Pelicans lose 12th of last 13, guarantee no rainout tonight

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (30-28), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, were limited to four hits Wednesday in a 5-0 shutout loss against the Potomac Nationals at TicketReturn.com Field.

The Pelicans have lost 12 of their last 13 games but retain a half game lead in the Southern Division after Winston-Salem lost against Salem.

Right-hander Nick Martinez (4-3) started and took the loss for Myrtle Beach, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits over six innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out eight, his second highest total of the season. Left-hander Robbie Ray (4-2) beat the Pelicans for the second time this season, hurling 6.2 scoreless innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The Nats took the early lead with two runs in the second inning on RBI singles from Francisco Soriano and Billy Burns. The Nats added an unearned run on a throwing error from Luis Sardinas in the sixth inning. Randolph Oduber stroked an RBI single in the eighth inning and Michael Taylor doubled in a run in the ninth.

Rougned Odor was 0-for-4 and saw his eight-game hitting streak come to a close.

Left-hander Will Lamb worked two innings out of the pen, allowing one earned run on two hits. Ryan Harvey worked the ninth inning and allowed Taylor’s run-producing two-bagger.

The Pelicans never advanced a runner as far as second base in the game. After winning 11 straight home games, the Birds have dropped their last six at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Pelicans finish a four-game series Thursday with the Potomac Nationals at TicketReturn.com Field. First pitch is on tap for 7:05 p.m. EST. Catch all the action on AM 1050 and FM 101.9 – Fox Sports in Myrtle Beach. Right-hander Luke Jackson (5-4, 2.44) will be opposed by P-Nats left-hander Sammy Solis (0-0, 2.45).

Tomorrow is “Guaranteed Great Weather Night” – if any rain falls after the gates open at 6 p.m., all fans will receive a voucher to attend another game. If more than .25 inches falls, one lucky fan will walk away with $10,000.00.
