Pelicans outhit Hillcats but can’t hang on to early lead

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, jumped out on Carolina League wins leader Gus Schlosser early Tuesday, but couldn’t hold on, slipping 8-3 at City Stadium.

Wasting no time, Odubel Herrera singled to lead off the ball game.  Two batters and a steal of second later he scored on a single by Hanser Alberto.

The 1-0 lead was short-lived though.  Lynchburg pinned four runs on the board in their half of the first inning.  Former Pelican Mycal Jones triple to lead off and scored on a single by Dan Brewer.  Adam Milligan, another former Pelican, then reached on an error.  Edward Salcedo followed with a three run homer for a 4-1 lead.

After the Pelicans battled to add a run in the top of the third inning to make it 4-2, Lynchburg plated a controversial run in the third inning.  Milligan scored, heading home after a throw to second on a Salcedo steal got away.  Milligan seemed to be out before Tomas Telis put the ball on the ground.  It appeared that Telis may have secured the out before the ball came loose.  A Jason Wood argument did not prevail and the Pelicans trailed 5-2.

In the sixth Lynchburg really widened the gap with three runs off Nick McBride before an out was recorded.  McBride left after five plus innings, allowing eight runs and six earned.  Phil Klein then made his Pelicans debut and pitched two hitless innings while K’ing three.  Ben Rowen tossed a scoreless eighth.  Schlosser earned his 13th win with five innings of work.

Despite the loss the Pelicans did collect 10 hits and, for the second straight night, outhit their opponent in defeat.  Alberto, Herrera, Edwin Garcia and Jeremy Williams had multi-hit efforts.

Myrtle Beach looks to avoid the sweep tomorrow with Joe Van Meter on the hill at 7:05.
