Pelicans outlast hurricane, Dash in national TV debut

pel-parraThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans survived a brush with Hurricane Arthur to make their national television debut Thursday night in a 4-1 victory over the visiting Winston-Salem Dash.

Despite heavy rains and winds throughout the day and early evening, the Pelicans decided the show must go on for their date as the CBS Sports’ Minor League Baseball Game of the Week.

As it turned out, there was a bigger threat to their air time on the West Coast than the Category 2 that was steaming along the Carolina coastline. Just as the game was scheduled to go live at 8 p.m., the Under-14 fast-pitch softball that was airing went into extra innings,

Fortunately for Myrtle Beach, only the pregame ceremonies and the top of the first inning were lost, and it didn’t take long for the Pelicans to make the game interesting. Nick Williams hit a solo homer in th bottom of the first and the Pelicans led the rest of the way.

Myrtle Beach tallied three runs in the third, with Jorge Alfaro, Preston Beck and Chris Grayson delivering three straight RBIs. Starter Luis Parra made it stand up with a four-hitter over seven frames and reliever Abel De Los Santos closed out the game for his eighth save.
