Pelicans return home after capping strong road swing

pel-6hitThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans knocked off the Carolina Mudcats 4-1 on Monday afternoon at Five County Stadium on Monday.

The Birds held the Mudcats scoreless over the final eight innings and led the whole game, winning the series three games to one.

Both teams posted runs in the first. The first four Pelicans reached in the first inning. Myrtle Beach (32-17) collected RBI knocks from Christopher Bostick and Joey Gallo on a single and a double to pull ahead 2-0.

The Mudcats (22-26) scored in the first inning for the fourth time in the series. With a runner on and two outs, Anthony Gallas slugged a double to right center to score Todd Hankins to cut the lead to 2-1.

Pelicans starter Andrew Faulkner got out of the inning after that and did not allow a hit until the fifth. He faced the minimum from the second through the fourth, carving up the Mudcats lineup. Coming off of nine-strikeout start, the southpaw fanned four on Monday. He surrendered a walk and a pair of singles in the fifth but kept the lead in tact at 2-1.

The Birds notched insurance runs in the later innings. Like Faulkner, Michael Peoples held the opposition scoreless after the first inning. The Mudcats righty struck out seven Pelicans over six innings. Clayton Cook entered for the seventh. The Pelicans brought a run across on a wild pitch in the seventh, and Bostick smashed a home run over the center field wall in the eighth; Myrtle Beach led 4-1.

Jose Monegro and Will Lamb combined for 4 2/3 scoreless and hitless frames in relief of Faulkner to polish off the series win. Monegro walked one and struck out a batter in 2 1/3 innings in his 2014 Pelicans debut. Lamb retired four batters and walked a pair, collected his first save of the year and second of his career.

Faulkner (3-0) picked up the win, while Peoples (2-5) was handed the loss.

The Pelicans completed their road trip 5-2 and head back home to take on the Salem Red Sox on Tuesday night.
