Pelicans smash Keys behind Skole’s smoking-hot series

Jake Skole hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the fifth inning Thursday as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (12-8) toppled the Frederick Keys 5-2 at TicketReturn.com Field.

Alec Asher and Joe Van Meter combined on a two-hitter, propelling the Pelicans to their sixth win in seven tries. The Birds took three of four from the Keys and remain in first place in the southern division.

Asher (2-1) earned his second straight win, allowing two runs – one earned – on just two hits over seven innings. Asher struck out four and allowed just one base runner after the third inning. Joe Van Meter worked the final two innings and notched his first save.

The Pelicans scored three times to take the lead in the fifth inning. After Skole’s triple got behind a diving Brenden Webb, Grayson added an RBI double, extending his on-base streak to 10 games.

The Pelicans lead swelled to 5-2 in the seventh inning on an RBI triple from Preston Beck.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the early innings. Royce Bolinger hit his second home run of the season in the second inning, an opposite field long ball to give the Pelicans a 1-0 advantage. The Keys grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a two-run double into the left field corner from leadoff hitter Sammie Star.

The two hits surrendered is the fewest the Pelicans have surrendered in a game this season.

Skole, Bolinger and Grayson each registered two hits for the Pelicans. Skole finished the series with five hits and was on base nine times.

The Pelicans have won 11 of their last 14 meetings with the Keys at TicketReturn.com Field.

The Pelicans welcome the Potomac Nationals tomorrow to begin a three-game series. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Nick Martinez (2-1, 3.78) takes the ball for Myrtle Beach and he will be opposed by Potomac left-hander Robbie Ray (1-1, 1.96).
