Pelicans snap City Stadium jinx with 16-hit performance

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (59-40, 19-11) throttled the Lynchburg Hillcats 10-2 Tuesday, salvaging a game in the three-game series at City Stadium.

The Pelicans, who had lost their last six games at City Stadium, pounded out 16 hits, the team’s second highest total of the season.

Trever Adams paced the uprising, finishing 4-for-4 with three doubles and three runs scored. All nine Pelicans starters tallied at least one hit.

Right-hander Alec Asher claimed the win (7-6), allowing one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts over five innings.

Patrick Cantwell, Edwin Garcia, Preston Beck and Jake Skole each registered two hits. Drew Robinson was 1-for-2 with three walks and a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

The two teams traded runs in the opening inning – Adams started the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning. After an RBI single from Trent Moses tied the game in the last of the first, the Birds took the lead right back in the second  inning. Chris Grayson started the inning with a double and scored on Edwin Garcia’s RBI groundout.

The Pelicans knocked Hillcats starter A.J. Holland out of the game after three innings. The right-hander was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits including a three-run third inning in which eight men came to the plate. Holland issued four walks, three of which came in the third inning.

Will Lamb worked two innings out of the bullpen and allowed one earned run on three hits. Jon Edwards got the final six outs of the game and did not allow a run. Adams’ three doubles is the most by a Pelican in a game this season.

The road swing continues Wednesday when the Pelicans begin a four-game series with the Wilmington BlueRocks at Frawley Stadium. Left-hander Victor Payano (5-5, 5.81) gets the start for the Pelicans.
