Pelicans surrender five HRs for fifth consecutive defeat

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (29-21), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, surrendered  a season-high five home runs Tuesday and fell 8-1 to the Lynchburg Hillcats at Calvin Falwell Field.

The Pelicans have lost five straight games, the team’s longest skid since the 2011 season.

Left-hander Victor Payano (4-3) started for Myrtle Beach and took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and three home runs over six innings. Greg Ross (2-1) claimed the win, tossing seven innings of one-run, five-hit baseball.

Robby Hefflinger, the league’s home run leader, hit his 12th and 13th home runs of the season, while third baseman Kyle Kubitza clubbed two long balls of his own.

Matt Weaver got the scoring started for Lynchburg, lacing a two-out, three-run home run in the second inning to give the Hillcats a 3-0 lead. Hefflinger drilled the first of his two home runs in the third inning to make it 4-0 Hillcats.

The Pelicans got on the board with an RBI double from Royce Bolinger in the fourth inning. Rougned Odor started the inning with a double but was caught between third and home following a come-backer from Trever Adams.

With the Pelicans trailing 4-1 in the sixth. Kubitza hit his first home run to right-center. Left-hander Will Lamb entered in the seventh and allowed a two-run shot to Hefflinger in the seventh and a solo blast to Kubitza in the eighth. The lefty allowed three earned runs on three hits over two innings.

Bolinger paced the Pelicans, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

At two hours and 11 minutes, Tuesday’s game was the shortest nine-inning game the Pelicans have played this season.

The Pelicans play the third game of a four-game series Wednesday at Calvin Falwell Field. First pitch is on tap for 6:05 p.m.
