Pelicans turn triple play; fan also walks away a winner

pel-fielderThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans turned a triple play in the fourth inning of their 8-6 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Saturday night.

The triple play made a winner of David Murphy of Marietta, Georgia who won a tablet, a laptop, and an HDTV in the HTC Triple Play.

This is the second season that the Pelicans have partnered with HTC for the promotion.  Though no triple play was turned last season, one lucky fan was awarded the bundle of prizes during the final game of the regular season.  This is the first time a fan has won the bundle because of the Pelicans turning a triple play.

Fans were able can sign up for the sweepstakes at the Visitor Information Booth on the concourse behind home plate.

If the Pelicans turn a triple play during any home game, one lucky fan was able to win a tablet, a laptop, and a HDTV courtesy of HTC. On Saturday, David Murphy was selected as the winner after the uncommon event.

With the Pelicans ahead 6-1 in the fourth inning, starting pitcher Victor Payano allowed consecutive singles to open the inning. On a 1-1 pitch, catcher Joe Odom hit a one-hop smash to third baseman Luis Mendez, who ran to third base for the first out, made a one hop throw to second base for the second out, and Christopher Bostick completed the relay with a throw to first baseman Preston Beck for the third out.

For all three players, it was their first triple play turned. “It was awesome,” said Bostick. “I can’t remember, you know, smiling that much at one time.”

Beck had never even seen one in person, much less been a part of the rare feat. “He hit it to Mendez, and I wasn’t even thinking about a triple being play being possible and then all of a sudden, the ball is coming to me. It took me almost halfway to the dugout to realize what actually happened, and I was pretty excited.”

Mendez, who started the play, echoed the feelings of his teammates: “It was my first time being part of a triple play. It was awesome,” exclaimed Mendez after the game.

The Pelicans continue their series with the Hillcats on Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
