Pelicans win twinbill opener; rain wipes out the nightcap

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (45-32, 5-3), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, beat the Lynchburg Hillcats 10-2 Sunday in the opening game of a double-header at TicketReturn.com Field.

The second seven-inning game was suspended in the third inning with the Pelicans leading 3-2. The second game is not official so it will be picked up the next time the Hillcats return to Pelicans Ballpark in August. The game was suspended with nobody down and runners on first and second in the third inning.

In game one, right-hander Nick Martinez (7-4) earned the win for the Pelicans, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits over 5.1 innings of work. The right-hander walked four and struck out four. Navery Moore (7-7) was saddled with the loss for the Hillcats, allowing 10 earned runs on 10 hits over four innings with five strikeouts.

Joe Maloney paced the Pelicans, finishing 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Maloney drilled a two-run single in the first inning and added a two-run double in the fourth inning.

The Pelicans snagged the early lead on Maloney’s two-run single but the Hillcats tied the game up with two runs in the third inning. Myrtle Beach took the lead for good by scoring five runs in the third inning. Chris Grayson added a two-out, two-run single and Preston Beck contributed a two-run triple. Trever Adams started the rally with an RBI single.

Rougned Odor finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, including a run-producing two-bagger in a three-run fourth inning.

Edwin Garcia hit a two-run home run in the second game but the stats will not count until the game is finalized.

The Pelicans have won five straight games against the Hillcats at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Pelicans host the Salem Red Sox Monday at TicketReturn.com Field. First pitch is on tap for 7:05 p.m. EST. Right-hander Alec Asher (4-5, 3.53) will oppose left-hander Micky Pea.
