Pirates plunder Chanticleers

East Carolina had four players score in double-figures en route to handing Coastal Carolina its second loss of the year, 76-51 Monday in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

Sam McLaurin scored the first point of the game on a free throw at the 18:37 mark of the first half. That would be the only time the Chanticleers would lead as East Carolina built an early 16-6 lead with 13:01 left in the first half.

The Pirates (6-4) extended their lead to 15 points at the 4:47 mark of the first half after Shamarr Bowden hit one of his five three-pointers, recording a game-high 17 points on the night. Entering Monday’s game the Chants had not trailed by more than nine points through the first 10 games.

Coastal (9-2) would get within 10 at the 18:14 mark of the second period after a dunk from Chris Gradnigo. ECU would answer with a 12-0 run during the next 3:09, capped off by a three-pointer by Miguel Paul.

The Chanticleers had their worst shooting performance of the year, finishing 20-of-55 (36.4%) including 3-of-21 (14.3%) from beyond the arc. The Pirates shot 25-of-53 (47.2%) that included 8-of-18 (44.4%) from three. ECU also connected on 18-of-21 (85.7%) from the free throw line, its best mark on the year.

McLaurin recorded seven rebounds on the night, giving him 502 career boards. He is only the third player in CCU history to record 500 career rebounds and at least 100 blocked shots. This feat has only been accomplished by 15 players in Big South Conference history.

Anthony Raffa extended his double-figures scoring streak to 20 games, scoring a team-high 14 points. McLaurin added 11 points for the while Jon Pack grabbed seven boards for Coastal

Coastal returns home to host The College of Charleston on Thursday, Dec. 16 at Kimbel Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
