Poole pitches Chants to first Big South victory of season


Redshirt freshman Tyler Poole struck out six with no walks over seven innings and senior Ryan Connolly picked up his fifth save of the year en route to setting Coastal Carolina and Big South career records for appearances with 118 in a 4-1 Chanticleer win over Gardner-Webb Saturday night at Pelicans Ballpark.

Coastal Carolina improves to 12-11 overall, 1-1 in the Big South while the Runnin’ Bulldogs drop to 13-9-1, 2-3.

Due to inclement weather, the start time for Sunday’s season finale between Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb has been pushed back to a 4 pm start.

Poole improved to 3-1 on the season – his lone setback coming in his collegiate debut at top-ranked North Carolina. The Hickory native scattered six hits and allowed one run.

Connolly, who set CCU and Big South single-season records for appearances with 40 as a freshman, has led the Big South in appearances in each of his first three years – sharing the honor with teammate Aaron Burke last season. The Charleston native worked a perfect ninth, getting a strikeout, ground out and pop out to secure the win.

Coastal Carolina broke the ice with a run in the third. Connor Owings and Nick Oberg had back-to-back singles and, after a Ted Blackman sacrifice bunt, Jacob May drove in Owings with an RBI ground out. Coastal looked to add to its lead as Colin Hering followed with a single to center, but Gardner-Webb’s JJ Nazzaro threw out Oberg at the plate for the final out.

The Chants manufactured a run in the fourth. Alex Buccilli hit a leadoff single and took third on Jake Kane’s hit-and-run single to right field. The two then executed a double steal with Kane swiping second and Buccilli scoring on the backend of the play.

Coastal padded its advantage with two runs in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. Blackman drew a one-out walks and May followed with an RBI double to right-center field. Two batters later, Will Remillard singled down the left field line to bring home Blackman and extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
