Palmetto State Rollergirls Jam Richland Regulators

Starting out the season 0-3, the Palmetto State Rollergirls scheduled a match with the Richland Regulators Bad Company’s B team. That was before rolling off 6 wins in a row and clinching entry into the season ending South Carolina state championships being held next month in Charleston. When the offer to send the A team instead was made to Bad Company, they declined.

That decision proved costly for the team from the midlands as Palmetto State rolled past the Regulators 194-86 in two 30-minute periods of play Saturday afternoon at the North Myrtle Beach recreation department.

Laying down their own portable flat track, then laying down the competition, Palmetto State got out to an early lead, scoring back-to-back, 15-point jams in the first three sessions, and by halftime the lead was almost insurmountable with Palmetto State leading 96-19. With Malice’s (Robin Skerdensky, bank teller by day) 52 points and Choker Face’s (Erin Mathe) 63 points leading the way, Palmetto State continued to hop and slash their way through their opponents. Scream Weaver (Laura Hamelman, a school teacher) held the defensive side of the oval for Palmetto State repeatedly putting Richland’s Lethal Lo (Lauren Sease) on the floor, earning Scream Weaver the game MVP award.

Richland made a valiant effort at a comeback in second half action, outscoring Palmetto State 43-21 in the first 10 minutes of play, but the repeated slams to the floor took its toll on Richmond at that point and Palmetto State pulled away for a 194-86 victory that never looked in doubt.

So, what is a roller derby match really like? It begins with fedoras, funky sunglasses, heavy makeup, loud music, entertaining public address announcers, and a circus-like atmosphere. That is until the first whistle blows, and then it becomes a release of aggression from ladies that have practiced and strategized for months. The PA announcer pronounced it a “chess match on wheels”, Mayhem West (Kelly Klimczyk, bartender by day) says “it’s a great way to release some aggression, it’s very competitive, and I really like that it’s women coming together”.

Speaking of that aggression, Tart of Darkness (Shannon Stewart) was originally a competitive roller girl until she broke her arm in eight places during a match in 2008. Fully healed with proud scars and pins in the elbow, she now acts as one of the many referees during matches. Kat Von Kill (Kate Briody) was removed from the game by her coaches following an incident in which she returned from the penalty box, rolled into the playing area and proceeded to level the first player she came in contact with, delivering a double elbow blow to the back of one of Richland’s enforcers.

Palmetto State moves to 7-3 on the season and will next compete in the day long South Carolina state championships on November 13 in Charleston. Visit them online at www.palmettostaterollergirls.com
