Perfect Lady Panthers lead local teams to Lower State

After 13 tournaments and regular season matches, the Carolina Forest girls  golf team remains undefeated. They take their perfect record to their home course for Monday’s Lower State Tournament at Myrtle Beach National.

“We’ve beaten all of the teams in Horry County, all of the other schools are scared of us,” said Lady Panthers coach Vil Caroso, who is in his first season as the girls golf team coach but has coached the boys team for the past eight years. “The girls are easier to coach than the boys. All I have to worry about is injuries. They work very hard.”

The young team has only one senior, Lia Farrar, who is joined by one junior, one freshman, and the rest still in middle school. Caroso says the team’s biggest asset is that the younger girls have tremendous room for improvement by the time they become upperclassmen.

Farrar agrees. “Yes, we lost a couple of good golfers last year, ” she said, “but we gained some new ones this year.”

With the Lower State tournament teeing off Monday in its own backyard, Caroso likes his team’s chances of coming out on top. “Lower States is at our home course, Myrtle Beach National,” he said. “There’ll be at least eight teams. I really think we can win it.”

A top eight finish will assure that Carolina Forest advances to next week’s state tournament, the Lady Panthers’ ultimate goal. “States is always the toughest, 16 of the best teams, and I believe we can come in the top five,” Caroso said.

This is Farrar’s last season on the team, and she couldn’t wish for a better way to finish. “It’s the first season that I’ve had an undefeated year, so it feels really good to end it like this,” she said. With Lower States only a few weeks away, Farrar and her team are getting ready.

The Class 4A Lady Panthers will be joined by three local Class 3A schools – North Myrtle Beach, St. James and Socastee.
