Red Sox shut out Pelicans, spoil Buckel’s return to MB

pel-buckelMyrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, fell to the Salem Red Sox on Friday night at Pelicans Ballpark in well-pitched affair.

An unearned run opened the scoring in the seventh inning and the Sox added three in the eighth to win 4-0.

Cody Buckel put together a successful return to the Advanced-A level. Rangers Nolan Ryan Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2012 walked the first two batters he faced but retired the next three to get out of the first unscathed. He allowed leadoff baserunners in the second and third but posted zeros. He finished his evening by retiring the final five he faced. In total he tossed four scoreless innings with four walks and a pair of strikeouts.

William Cuevas matched scoreless innings with Buckel and added two more in the fifth and sixth. The Pelicans (0-2) collected a hit in each inning off of the righthander but could not bring a run across. The team went 0-for-5 on the night with runners in scoring position.

Jason Knapp entered for the seventh inning for the Birds. Once a top prospect in the Phillies and Indians systems, Knapp made his first appearance since September 5, 2010. He allowed an unearned run on a walk, a stolen base, a passed ball, and a wild pitch. Otherwise, he pitched well, getting a pair of groundouts and a strikeout. The run, however, gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead, a lead that they would not relinquish.

Salem (2-0) added three insurance runs in the eighth off of lefthander Cody Ege. Reed Gragnani tripled to lead off the frame and came home on a sacrifice fly. Carson Blair added a pair with a long home run to left field.

The Red Sox bullpen mowed down the Birds to finish the night. The tandem of Austin Maddox and Dayan Diaz retired the final nine Pelicans hitters, seven via the strikeout.

The Pelicans play game three of the set against the Red Sox on Saturday night.
