Region 6-4A: Panthers roll; Tigers, Braves fall on road

cffoot-28A pair of surprise Region 6-4A blowouts Friday night sets up a huge showdown for playoff position between Carolina Forest and Conway in next week’s regular season finale.

While the Panthers (5-5 overall 2-2 region) were blowing out visiting West Florence 41-3, the Tigers (8-2, 3-1) were getting hammered at Sumter 51-14. Carolina Forest takes the short drive down Highway 501 next Friday to take on Conway with a shot at second place in the region on the line.

Carolina Forest running back Dyverse Simmons rushed for more than 250 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the first quarter from 62 and 4 yards. Drake Stone’s 5-yard run and Matt Beale’s 78-yard TD bomb to Xavier Lynch gave the Panthers a 27-0 halftime lead. Simmons and Stone added third-quarter TD runs to make it 41-0.

Meanwhile in Sumter, the Gamecocks were putting a similar whipping on Conway. Quentin Anderson ran for three touchdowns to jump out to a 30-0 lead before the Tigers got on the board on a TD run by Tyrone Bennett. Sumter continued to roll in the second half and cruised to the easy win. Conway was playing without injured star receiver Bryan Edwards but it was the defense that couldn’t contain the Gamecocks.

* South Florence 25, Socastee 13: The Braves (2-8 overall, 1-3 region) came away empty four times in the red zone, including a fumble that was returned 80 yards for a touchdown by David Vereen that turned the game in the Bruins’ favor.

Socastee took an early 7-0 lead on the touchdown run by Keyon Clora, but the Bruins responded with a pair of TDs for a 13-7 halftime lead.Trailing by six in the third quarter, the Braves were poised to score a go-ahead touchdown but instead saw Vereen make it a 19-7 lead.

Socastee quarterback Hunter Illing hit Taylor Karnap for a 5-yard TD to cut the deficit in half, 19-13, but Vereen caught his second TD pass to go with his scoop and score for the hat trick and the Bruins held the Braves out of the end zone for the third time inside the 5-yard line to close out the win.

Socastee was eliminated from playoff contention. The Braves face Sumter next week.
