Region 6-4A: Tigers thump Braves; Panthers clipped

confoot-23The Conway High football team’s second meeting of the season with rival Socastee looked a lot like the first – one-sided.

The visiting Tigers took a 45-6 victory over the Braves on Friday night, giving them a total of 100 points scored against Socastee this season. Conway won the Week 2 meeting 55-0.

Conway’s Jah’Maine Martin rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Peyton Derrick threw for three TDs – two of them to Tyrone Bennett.

Conway standout receiver Bryan Edwards caught a TD pass and had a punt return for a TD called back before exited the game with an apparent shoulder injury. His status is uncertain.

Martin’s first TD gave Conway an early 6-0 lead before the Tigers broke it open in the second quarter. Bennett caught TD passes to open and close the period, and Martin and Edwards scored TDs in between for a 33-0 halftime lead.

Socastee (1-6, 0-2) got on the board in the third on a 3-yard TD run by Zach Shear, but the Tigers added two more scores and drained the clock to claim the victory.

Conway (6-1, 2-0) plays host to South Florence next Friday while the Braves travel to West Florence on Thursday.

* South Florence 35, Carolina Forest 28: Hykeem White scored his third touchdown of the game in the final minutes as the Bruins (4-4, 1-1) edged the Panthers (4-4, 1-1).

Following Jason Craft’s 80-yard TD bomb from Ryan Beale midway through the fourth quarter to tie the game at 28-all, the Panthers couldn’t stop White from rumbling 39 yards for the game-winner. Carolina Forest’s bid to tie it up came up short as time expired.

Beale hit Xavier Lynch on another 80-yard TD on the opening play of the game, and Dyverse Simmons’ 2-yard run gave Carolina Forest an early 14-0 lead. But the Bruins scored 20 unanswered points to take their first lead.

Craft caught his first deep TD pass from Beale late in the first half to take a 21-20 halftime lead. After a scoreless third quarter, White scored the go-ahead TD and 2-point conversion to make it 28-21. Carolina Forest managed to tie it but couldn’t stop South Florence late.

The Panthers face Sumter next Friday.
