Football: Tigers rip Bruins; Panthers falter at Sumter

The Conway High Tigers made a homecoming statement Friday night, perhaps one loud enough to be heard in Sumter.

The No. 8-ranked Tigers (8-1 overall, 3-0 Region 6-5A) pounded visiting South Florence 62-14 to set up a first-place showdown with the No. 7 Gamecocks, who have an identical record after defeating Carolina Forest on Friday. Conway travels to Sumter next week with a region title at stake.

The Tigers got a pair of first-half touchdown runs from Daiquawn Clark and Antonio Long, as well as scores by the Moody brothers – Juwon on a 75-yard TD bomb from D’Wuan Grainger and Jaylen on an interception return – for a 41-14 halftime lead. Rakim Bellamy, Tate Finkley and Keimone Graham found the end zone in the second half as the Tigers put it on cruise control late.

* Sumter 29, Carolina Forest 20: The Panthers (5-3, 2-1) suffered their first region loss of the season against the Gamecocks (7-1, 3-0) in a back-and-forth battle in Sumter.

Carolina Forest quarterback Matt Beale scored on a fourth-quarter TD run to cut the deficit to 22-20, but the potential game-tying 2-point conversion failed. The Gamecocks put it out of reach on Dajon Butts’ 50-yard TD run in the final minutes.

Sumter QB Zykiem Jackson ran and threw for first-half touchdowns, but the Panthers kept pace on Beale’s 33-yard TD strike to Shawn Mallo and David Legette’s 25-yard TD run. But Jackson accounted for his third TD of the game in the third period to put the Gamecocks up 22-14.

The Panthers return home next week to face West Florence.

* West Florence 50, Socastee 27: The Knights (2-6, 1-2) won a shootout with the Braves (4-4, 0-3) on Thursday to keep Socastee winless in Region 6-5A play.

* Dillon Christian 40, Christian Academy 17: The Saints (4-4) suffered a setback to the defending SCISA state champs in a region contest.
