Region races resume for soccer, baseball, softball

mbsoc-22Spring break served as the perfect dramatic pause on the high school spring sports season, but now it’s time to get back to the business of securing postseason plans.

With region races put on hold for the past week, Grand Strand teams return to the late-season push of clinching playoff spots this week.

Here’s a look at how the postseason push is shaking out:

Soccer

* Perhaps no sports features more drama than the Region 7-4A soccer races, where the Myrtle Beach boys and girls teams can wrap up their respective region titles this week with wins over Marlboro County and rival North Myrtle Beach. A loss in their finales would set up a three-team tiebreaker with the Chiefs and St. James, with the Sharks holding a slight edge in the point differential among the three teams.

Region 6-5A soccer is less dramatic, with the unbeaten Socastee boys and girls needing only one more win – beginning Tuesday vs. West Florence – to lock up league titles. The Carolina Forest boys are tied with South Florence for the fourth and final playoff spot, while the Lady Panthers can punch their playoff ticket with at least a No. 3 seed by defeating rival Conway on Tuesday.

Baseball

* Two local powers made surprisingly slow starts – Carolina Forest in 6-5A and St. James in Region 7-4A – but both used titles in last week’s Mingo Bay Classic to breath new life into their seasons. The Panthers are battling Conway for the fourth and final playoff spot, and the Sharks need a win over Wilson to keep their playoff hopes alive. Both teams will be dangerous if they can get their feet in the postseason door. Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach can clinch the 7-4A title with a win over Marlboro County or North Myrtle Beach, which is still in the hunt for the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game.

Softball

* Both local region titles have been clinched by Strand teams – Conway in Region 6-5A and St. James in Region 7-4A. But there’s still work to be done by other local teams to qualify for the postseason. Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach clash for second place in 7-4A and a home playoff game, while Socastee is still alive for second place in 6-5A.
