Ribeiro, McLaws honored; Chants move back into poll

Coastal Carolina midfielder Pedro Ribeiro has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week ending Sept. 15 after netting a trio of goals that led the Chanticleers to a pair of wins.

Also, teammate Shawn McLaws was named the Big South Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for anchoring Coastal Carolina’s defensive efforts in wins against South Carolina and No. 15 UNC Greensboro.

In addition, after spending a week outside the top-25, the Chanticleers rejoined the rankings coming in at No. 22 in College Soccer News’ latest poll.

After the Chants fell behind in the fifth minute to South Carolina, Ribeiro netted the equalizer in the 13th minute of play with a penalty kick following a South Carolina takedown of Ricky Garbanzo in the box. The goal was Ribeiro’s second via a penalty kick in his Coastal career and first since his freshman campaign.

Ribeiro backed up his one-goal performance against South Carolina with a two-goal effort to lead Coastal to a 4-2 road upset at No. 15 UNC Greensboro. Ribeiro scored his first goal with a mid-air strike that tucked inside the near post following a perfect ball from a Justin Portillo corner kick. Ribeiro’s second goal also came on a set piece. Portillo’s corner kick was knocked around the box before Uchenna Uzo headed it down to the foot of Ribeiro, who uncorked a blast into the back of the net from six yards out. Ribeiro’s multi-goal game was his first of the season and third of his collegiate career.

McLaws played three positions over the course of the two games – holding defensive midfielder, center back and right back.  He transitioned seamlessly between the trio of the positions “on the fly” without allowing any of his marks to attempt a shot on frame.  The honor is his first Big South Defensive Player of the Week nod this season.

The Chanticleers, owners of a 3-2-0 record, are now 2-2 against top-25 opponents this season.

Coastal Carolina continues its current three-game road stand at Presbyterian College on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Kickoff in Clinton, S.C., is slated for 6 p.m. The Chanticleers defeated the Blue Hose 5-0 in the sides’ last meeting in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2012 Big South Tournament, moving Coastal’s edge in the all-time series to 10-1-1.
