Cam Richards wins Hyatt Microwave Surf Challenge

The Grand Strand’s first ever Pro/Grom event held in Garden City Beach Saturday and Sunday saw small waves. But in the Hyatt Automotive Microwave Surf Challenge, the event is held in whatever conditions exist.

Held at the second access past the Garden City Pier, the over $8,000 purse brought in some of the best young surfers from along the East Coast for the 4 man, 20 minute heats.

With sanctioned ASP judges on hand to provide unbiased scoring, local surfer Cam Richards walked away with the big prize, winning the Open, and Under 18 Boys categories for a $2000 payday.

Local Shaper and Village Surf Shoppe owner Kelly Richards said “the waves were really fun on Saturday, but they dropped a bit on Sunday. We took a break to let the tide change and then got back at it.”

The event itself was setup to raise money for two charities, the Boy & Girls Club, and the American Red Cross. Richards added “We think we have raised between $3500 and $5000 for charity.”

Designed to give Groms (a young surfer) the opportunity to surf an event like they may see on a competitive tour, local surf organizer Denny Green says “We want to provide a really cool contest for the kids. They don’t get to participate in these type of contests. We hope to get them really stoked about surfing. There’s never been a pro contest for kids on the East Coast, especially with this kind of purse. “

Richards went on to add, “Next year, the word will get out and it will get bigger and bigger.  Our sponsor, Hyatt Automotive was very happy and they have already committed for this to be annual event.”

Other winners include Addison Miles in the Under 16 Boys, Luke Gordon Under 14 Boys, Micha Cantor Under 12 Boys, and Katie Gordon Womens.
