Riptides close out season at Charleston, Columbia meets

riptideslogoThe locally-based Riptides Racing Team closed out 2015 with the final two swim meets in December over the weekend – the Grand Prix #3 in Charleston and the Carolina Classic in Columbia.

Sixteen members of Riptides Racing Team participated in the third installment of the 12/Under Grand Prix meet on December 5.  Riptides continued their high success rate with nearly 80% personal best times achieved by the athletes.  In addition, three new SC Swimming State Championship qualifying times, 9 top-6 finishes and one event win were achieved.

Ella Speir led Riptides with 3 new SC State q-times in the 100-backstroke, 100-freestyle and 500-freestyle. Hannah McDonough picked up the event win in the 50 breaststroke.

Nearly every swimmer attending earned at least one personal best time including Sadie Averitt, Emma Kinmartin, Mason Kinmartin, Caroline Lyons, Jessica Lyons, Olivia Lyons, Kylie McWhorter, Kyle Owens, Madera Palmer, Sterigos Paraschos, Marissa Patricio and Michaela Quiroga-Diaz Betts.  Sawyer Averitt and Jack Guthinger rounded out the squad to Charleston.

The final meet of the calendar year for Riptides Racing Team was the Carolina Classic at the University of SC.  More than 20 Riptides members participated in the prelims/Finals’ formatted meet.  For Riptides, more than 100 personal best times were achieved, as were 10 new SC Swimming q-times, 4 new Age-group Sectional Championship q-times and 5 new team records.  Riptides also placed in the Top-10 forty-eight times with 5 events wins.

Eddie Bateson swam to four event wins in the 100- and 200- breaststroke events and 200 and 400 Individual Medley (IM) events.

Harrison Clinton set new team records in the 50 butterfly and 50- and 200-breaststroke events.  Clinton also added two new Age-group Sectional Championship standards in the 100- and 200-butterfly events.

Chad Bateson added another SC Swimming State Championship q-time in the 100-backstroke, leading out the Riptides’ Medley Relay.  Hurley Cribb added a new SC Swimming State Championship q-time in the 200-breaststroke and just missed the 200-butterfly by 0.26 seconds.  Jake Flaherty posted new SC Swimming State Champ q-times in the 100-backstroke and 100-freestyle.  Hannah McDonough also posted new q-times in the 50- and 200-breaststroke events.  These are her first 11-12 q-times.   Ella Speir added yet another SC State q-time in the 50-backstroke.

Peyton McWhorter added a new SC Swimming q-time in the 200-IM, but also achieved her first 13-14 Age-group Sectional Champ q-time in the 100-butterfly.  Ian Morgan added two more SC State q-times in the 50-free and 400-IM and scored his first 13-14 Age-group Sectional q-time in the 200-butterfly.

Keyon Berenji, Connor Churchill, Danielle Flaherty, Joe Guthinger, Ella Habib, Kailey Habib, Matthew Key, Ethan Nechemia, Yianni Paraschos, Christian Patricio and Ireland Rose all swam to multiple persona best times.  Andi Churchill was right on her times and achieved a top-10 in the 500 freestyle.
