Riptides Racing puts up good times at state meet

The 2018 SC State Short Course Championship was held in Greenville earlier this month. Riptides Racing Team took nine out of the 10 swimmers with qualifying times to the State Championships, swimming away with four new Sectional qualifying times, two broken team records, and numerous personal best times.

Tony Zhang achieved 4 best times, one new Sectional cut, 7 top twenty finishes, with one of those a 9th place in his 200 IM.

Kai Wilmot swam in his first State meet to 3 best times, 3 top twenty finishes with one of those a 6th place in the 500 free, dropping almost 19 seconds AND scored 5 points for the team.

Mckenzie Washko, in her first ever State meet, took 7th place in the 100 back with a personal best time, scored 4 points for the Riptides and broke the 100 backstroke team record from 2009, with a time of 1:19.51.

Ireland Rose qualified for her second State meet in the 200 breast stroke, representing Riptides 11-12 girls.

Seth Riley swam to 3 best times, two top twenty finishes, with one of those an 7th place, his first Sectional cut, qualifying for finals,and ending with 8th place 3 points for the Riptides, all in his 100 breast stroke.

Peyton McWhorter qualified in 8 events for her first time in the 15-18 age group, swimming away with 3 best times in the 200 fly, 500 free, and the 100 free.

Hannah McDonough achieved 5 best times, 2 top twenty finishes, in her one and two hundred breast, a visit to the finals with her 100 breast, swimming to a 9th place, a Sectional qualifying time and scoring 2 points for the Riptides.

Jake Flaherty achieved 4 best times, 7 top twenty finishes with one of those a ninth place in the 1650 free, scoring 2 points for the Riptides. Jake also qualified for Sectionals in the 50 free with a time of 24.24-re-breaking his own team record in that event.

Connor Churchill rounded out the squad, qualifying for State in three events- the 50, 100, and 1650 freestyle events, swimming close to his best times.

Riptides will be competing in one more short course meet which will serve as a last chance for more State or Sectional qualifying times.

Coaches Diane Cayce and Mary Churchill are proud of the swimmers and their hard work as they move into the long course season.
